How strong is your password really?
Most people use passwords that can be cracked in seconds. "Password123" takes less than a second to crack with modern tools. Even something that feels secure like "Summer2024!" can be broken in under a minute because it follows a predictable pattern. The good news is that making a truly strong password is not complicated once you know what actually matters.
This tool checks your password right in your browser. Nothing you type is ever sent to a server. You get an instant strength score, an estimated crack time based on real GPU speeds, and specific tips to make your password stronger.
What makes a password strong?
Length matters more than anything else
Every character you add to a password multiplies the number of possible combinations exponentially. A 12 character password is not twice as hard to crack as a 6 character one, it is billions of times harder. Aim for at least 12 characters, and 16 or more if you are protecting something important.
Mix character types for maximum strength
Using uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters like ! @ # $ % all in the same password dramatically increases the number of possible combinations. A password that uses all four types and is 12 characters long is essentially uncrackable with current technology.
Avoid common words and predictable patterns
Hackers use dictionaries of millions of common passwords and phrases when trying to crack accounts. If your password contains real words, names, or obvious substitutions like replacing an E with a 3, it is much weaker than it looks. Random character combinations are always stronger than word based passwords of the same length.
Use a different password for every account
Even a strong password becomes a liability if you reuse it everywhere. When one website gets hacked and passwords are leaked, attackers automatically try those same passwords on hundreds of other sites. Using a password manager makes it easy to have a unique strong password for every account without having to memorize them all.
