Miles to kilometers
One mile equals 1.609 kilometers. So if a speed limit sign says 100 km/h, that is about 62 miles per hour. A 5K race is 3.1 miles. A marathon at 42.2 kilometers is 26.2 miles. The US is one of only three countries in the world still using miles instead of kilometers.
Pounds to kilograms
One pound equals 0.453 kilograms. To do a rough conversion in your head, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2 to get kilograms. So someone who weighs 180 pounds is about 82 kilograms. Most of the world uses kilograms for body weight, while the US uses pounds.
Fahrenheit to Celsius
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and then multiply by 5/9. So 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, which is normal body temperature, is 37 degrees Celsius. Freezing is 32F or 0C. A warm summer day of 86F is 30C. Boiling water is 212F or 100C.
